Optical Shop
For more than 100 years the Eye Center at The University of Kansas Health System has been a leader in eye care and vision health. It's what we do. It's what we love.
To serve Kansas City-area patients and the surrounding communities, we have 2 optical shops with glasses for teens and adults and 1 pediatric optical shop. All locations are open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays.
Need to refill contacts? Speak to an optician? Have questions about your optical bill? Email the optical shop staff.
Locations
The optical shop at 7400 Place Building in Prairie Village, Kansas, has free parking to the south and west of the building. Enter under the awning at the front door just off State Line Road. Once inside, enter the double doors to the left. The optical shop is in the Eye Center’s patient waiting room to the left of the double doors. You do not need to check in at the Eye Center desk or make an appointment to shop for glasses.
The pediatric optical shop at 7400 Place Building in Prairie Village, Kansas, has a separate entrance. We recommend parking on the west side of the building. Enter under the awning at the west entrance facing Eaton Street. Take the elevator to the first floor for the pediatric eye clinic. Walk through the patients’ waiting room. You do not need to check in or make an appointment to shop for glasses. The pediatric optical shop is down a short hallway to your left.
The optical shop at the Miller Building in Kansas City, Kansas, has parking available in Parking Garage 2 (P2) at the corner of Olathe Boulevard and Cambridge Street. Parking is $3 with validation, which can be received at any information desk. Use Entrance A on the ground level. Upon entering the building, access to the Miller Building is straight ahead and through the glass door on the left. Use the stairs or ramp and enter the door at the top of them. Eye Care is located to the left after entering.

Safer-to-wear lenses
The high-quality lenses in your eyeglasses are manufactured by Essilor®, an optical company that has been making optical lenses for more than 170 years. Partnering with another company that has been working in the optical industry for more than 100 years makes us feel confident that your eyeglasses are the best in quality, design and function.
There are several lens options through Essilor® including Varilux, the top progressive lens brand. We also offer Crizal, an anti-reflective coating for lenses that reduces reflections and makes them more scratch-, smudge- and water-resistant. For pediatric patients, we offer Essilor’s Stellest lenses. Studies show the Stellest lenses slowed myopia progression by 71% on average and are an easy-to-use way to help manage your child’s nearsightedness.
Insurance and discounts
We accept VSP, Versant Health (formerly Superior Vision), Premiere Eye Care, most Eyemed plans, Kansas Medicaid and Medicare. For those who do not have those insurance plans, we offer a 20% discount. There is also a 30% discount for The University of Kansas Health System and the University of Kansas Medical Center employees who have already used their insurance allowance or do not use insurance. A spare pair of glasses is always a good idea, so all customers may purchase a second pair of prescription glasses or sunglasses at 50% off within 60 days of their original purchase. A valid prescription (no older than one year) is required to order prescription glasses or contact lenses.
